Description: Cole was born in East Orange, New Jersey in 1909, and studied music in high school, at the Julliard Conservatory and at Capital University. In the 1930s he played with the Cab Calloway Orchestra and Stuff Smith from 1949 to 1953, Cole played with Louis Armstrong. In 1976 he enrolled as a full-time student and artist-in-residence at Capital University where, by 1979, he had received and honorary doctorate in musical arts.
